Frederick Chapter, NSDAR
Frederick, Maryland
The Frederick Chapter, NSDAR, was the second chapter established in the State of Maryland, officially organized on September 20, 1892. It obtained its simple name to honor the county, a natural geographic crossroads, which was the scene of many struggles in our nation. The chapter began with 14 charter members, with Betty Harrison Maulsby Ritchie serving as its first Regent. To commemorate the Repudiation Act of November 23, 1765, when ‘twelve immortal judges’ stood against the Stamp Act, the chapter adopted the motto “No taxation without representation.” This powerful phrase served as a reminder of our national history. Our chapter continues the tradition of observing Repudiation Day every year at its November meeting.
The Frederick Chapter, NSDAR, has been instrumental in making history in Frederick City and County. The Francis Scott Key monument was erected under the care of Mrs. Ritchie. The Braddock-Washington Monument, once the outstanding DAR memorial in the state, received the Maryland State Society, NSDAR, 2010 Historic Preservation Award for its relocation to the Middletown Overlook. A testament to our commitment to preserving history.
Numerous plaques on various buildings attest to the influence of our chapter. A bronze tablet honoring the "Twelve Immortal Justices who had repudiated the British Stamp Act on November 23, 1765" stands as a testament to our dedication. We have placed historic markers at significant locations, including the grave of Thomas Johnson, the birthplace of William Tyler Page, and the Hessian Barrack, among others. These efforts solidify our standing and credibility in the preservation of local history.
From its humble beginnings of 14 members, the chapter has now grown to over 100 members. The chapter continues to promote the National Society's goals of education, patriotism, and preserving history, by placing markers on graves and historic sites, donating to community projects, working with local schools in promoting Constitution Week, and honoring our veterans.
